Chennai's Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) now allows motorists to easily pay traffic fines using UPI/QR codes, streamlining the payment process. To make a payment via Unified Payments Interface (UPI), users can visit the official website at www.echallan.parivahan.gov.in. On the website, motorists need to input their challan number, vehicle registration number, or driving license number, click on "pay now" next to the listed challan, and choose the UPI option on the SBI ePay page. An official statement highlighted that this initiative simplifies digital payment options, enabling motorists to pay fines conveniently online. The authorities anticipate that this new payment system will lead to increased fine collections, as many drivers previously hesitated to pay online due to the complexity of the process. GCTP initially introduced the e-challan system in 2011 and cashless payment options in 2017, including debit/credit card payments, Paytm, post offices, and TN e-Seva centers. Motorists are advised to double-check payment links to avoid falling victim to phishing scams, as scammers have been sending fraudulent SMS messages related to traffic violations.
